“rhd” stands for Roling, Huber, Drüschler.
Prof. Dr. Bernhard Roling was the group leader and supervisor of Benedikt Huber and Marcel Drüschler during their time as PhD students at the University of Marburg. In gratitude for his support and for giving them the chance to focus on test cell development besides performing the experimental work, the first letter of his surname was included in the company name.

rhd instruments was founded in 2013 at the University of Marburg by Benedikt Huber and Marcel Drüschler. They both worked with ionic liquids during their time as PhD students. Since ionic liquids were very expensive, they had to develop small air-tight test cells for electrochemistry experiments which were not existing on the market. This was the beginning of the rhd instruments story.
