Pouch Cell Cycling with Pressure and Thickness Monitoring in the ComprePouch

The ComprePouch offers a simple platform for pouch cell cycling under controlled pressure applied via a set of springs. The stiffness of the springs can be chosen for the desired pressure range and cell breathing.

In this application note, a commercial graphite/LCO pouch cell was charged and discharged in the ComprePouch using each of the three included spring packages. The cell breathing and corresponding pressure increase during the charging process depended heavily on the spring stiffness, as can be seen on the left. The pressure increase corresponded closely to the expected behaviour based on the respective spring constant.

The spring simulation in the CompreDrive described in an earlier application note was verified against the ComprePouch cell breathing under real spring-loaded conditions.

Finally, the distribution of the pressure over the pouch cell surface while cycling in the ComprePouch could also be monitored in situ and was compared to the CompreCellPouch.
